Boppy
I thought I would start my
first blog review with an item I found amazing when I had Lilly. I had to have,
an emergency caesarean with Lilly. Which was a complete surprise, when I was
writing my birthing plan I had never considered it as an option. Well it
happened and after the epidural wore off, I was left in hospital feeling
helpless as my partner was doing all Lilly’s care. Lilly’s crying seemed
endless that first night. I couldn’t sit up properly and I was on a cocktail of
meds to manage my pain. I still felt like I had been cut in half but I was
determined that even if my birth hadn’t gone to plan I was going to breastfeed
my baby. I asked my partner to pick up my Boppy from our house and I started
feeding with more ease in hospital. The midwives were every happy with Lilly’s
positioning and she began to feed well and I felt comfortable, which made me
feel less helpless and allowed us to have bonding time.
The Boppy is a C shaped feeding
pillow, which fits around the front of your waist as you
sit to allow the recommended straight back for your infant to breastfeed. It
has a firm texture with removable machine washable cover. I purchased mine at
the Bluewater Baby show for £29.99 when I was pregnant in 2013. They range in
price depending on cover choice. I found the same as mine on Amazon for £35.54.
I brought the Chicco Boppy with cream velour slip with a tree pattern on the
front and a green spot pattern on the back. In comes in a nice plastic carry
bag which I’ve stored mine away in, for safekeeping.
I used mine at every home
feed, it allowed me to have a free hand, which is useful for those feeds when
you need to turn over the TV channel or answer a phone call. When you have a
caesarean you loose those stomach muscles that allow you to sit up and hold the
weight of your baby to your breast, without the support of a pillow I don’t
know how any other new mums do it. I feel the Boppy would be just as useful for
mums who haven’t had a caesarean, because who doesn’t need a free hand specially
if your new baby has older siblings. I also used mine when I was combination-feeding
Lilly with bottles. My pillow never lost its shape or became limp which was fantastic.
I however wish it was more transportable, it’s very bulky and definitely a home
only use item. 
I found the Boppy to fit
snuggly around my post pregnancy waist which was about a size 14. Eventually as
we moved away from breastfeeding, I used it as support floor chair for Lilly as
she was learning to sit up by herself. Online I have seen people use them as tummy-time
rests but I feel it would have been a little steep for Lilly. I would
definitely recommend this as a baby shower gift or must have baby essential.
